== Enabling other Third-Party Repositories == /!\ RPM Fusion is specifically designed to work with Fedora only. Mixing with other third-party RPM repositories can very easily lead to problems. Enable them at you own risk! In this case, you should seriously consider using the priorities yum plugin to enforce ordered protection of repositories. Packages installed from repositories with a higher priority will never be upgraded with packages from repositories with a lower priority. The priorities are also in effect when a new package is installed - if a package is in more than one repository, it will be installed from the repository with the highest priority. To install the priorities plugin, use the following command: {{{ yum install yum-priorities |
On Fedora up to 40, the command is as follow: {{{ sudo dnf config-manager --enable fedora-cisco-openh264 |
Line 65: | Line 76: |
To enable this plugin, make sure that you have plugins=1 in /etc/yum.conf and verify that the /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/priorities.conf file has the following content: | * Silverblue with rpm-ostree: {} # You will have to reboot for the rpmfusion repositories to appear) |
Line 67: | Line 80: |
{{{ [main] enabled=1 |

Line 72: | Line 85: |
If you want the plugin to protect high-priority repositories against obsoletes in low-priority repositories, enable the check_obsoletes boolean: {{{ check_obsoletes=1 |
* CentOS Steam 8 requires an additional step {{{ sudo dnf config-manager --enable powertools |
Line 78: | Line 89: |
You can add priorities to repositories by adding the line: {{{ priority=N |
* CentOS 8 (older version) used a case sensitive name for the PowerTools repository {{{ sudo dnf config-manager --enable PowerTools |
Line 84: | Line 93: |
to a repository entry, where N is an integer number from 1 to 99. The default priority for repositories is 99. The repositories with the lowest number have the highest priority. | * RHEL 8 requires an additional step {} |
Line 86: | Line 97: |
You should give a very high priority to Fedora and RPM Fusion repositories. | == AppStream metadata == RPM Fusion repositories also provide Appstream metadata to enable users to install packages using Gnome Software/KDE Discover. Please note that these are a subset of all packages since the metadata are only generated for GUI packages. For the current Fedora releases: the suggested method is to install appstream-data using DNF. * The following command will install the required group of packages: {} == Important notes == * You need to enable EPEL on RHEL or compatible distributions like CentOS before you enable RPM Fusion for EL. See the fedoraproject wiki for instruction how to enable EPEL. |

Installing Free and Nonfree Repositories
We have two separate software repositories:
free for Open Source Software (as defined by the Fedora Licensing Guidelines) which the Fedora project cannot ship due to other reasons
nonfree for redistributable software that is not Open Source Software (as defined by the Fedora Licensing Guidelines); this includes software with publicly available source-code that has "no commercial use"-like restrictions
Installation can be done either using a web browser, or via the command line.
Please also check the dedicated Multimedia page for well known additional post-install steps.
See a more dedicated page for OSTree Systems (such as Silverblue, Kinoite and CoreOS)
Also worth to mention is the CommonBugs sections.
Graphical Setup via Firefox web browser
1. First enable access to the free repository. For users of gpk (gnome package kit) or kpackagekit in Fedora that is easy and basically only one step: just click on one of the following files, depending on what distribution you use and then follow the default options that Firefox and Package Kit offer by clicking Enter a few times (¹):
2. Once that succeeds, you can enable access to the nonfree repositories by clicking on one of the following files, depending on what distribution you use and then follow the default options that Firefox and Package Kit offer by clicking Enter a few times(¹):
(¹) Once you clicked on above link Firefox will ask you how to Open the file. Here you can simply use the default and open the file with the default application Package Installer. Then Firefox will call Package Kit, which asks Do you want to install this file ?. Click OK to begin install; Package Kit then will complain about a Missing security signature; once you tell Package Kit to install the package nevertheless it will move on and install it. That's all.
Command Line Setup using rpm
To enable access to both the free and the nonfree repository use the following command:
Fedora with dnf:
sudo dnf install https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm
- On Fedora, we default to use the openh264 library, so you need the repository to be explicitly enabled.
On Fedora 41 and later:
sudo dnf config-manager setopt fedora-cisco-openh264.enabled=1
On Fedora up to 40, the command is as follow:
sudo dnf config-manager --enable fedora-cisco-openh264
Silverblue with rpm-ostree:
sudo rpm-ostree install https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm
# You will have to reboot for the rpmfusion repositories to appear)RHEL or compatible like CentOS
sudo dnf install --nogpgcheck https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/epel-release-latest-$(rpm -E %rhel).noarch.rpm sudo dnf install --nogpgcheck https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/el/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %rhel).noarch.rpm https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/el/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %rhel).noarch.rpm
CentOS Steam 8 requires an additional step
sudo dnf config-manager --enable powertools
CentOS 8 (older version) used a case sensitive name for the PowerTools repository
sudo dnf config-manager --enable PowerTools
RHEL 8 requires an additional step
sudo subscription-manager repos --enable "codeready-builder-for-rhel-8-$(uname -m)-rpms"
AppStream metadata
RPM Fusion repositories also provide Appstream metadata to enable users to install packages using Gnome Software/KDE Discover. Please note that these are a subset of all packages since the metadata are only generated for GUI packages.
For the current Fedora releases: the suggested method is to install appstream-data using DNF.
The following command will install the required group of packages:
sudo dnf update @core
Important notes
You need to enable EPEL on RHEL or compatible distributions like CentOS before you enable RPM Fusion for EL. See the fedoraproject wiki for instruction how to enable EPEL.
